Safety and Awareness Committee

I. Purpose

 A. Purpose: To increase and improve student awareness of personal and public safety issues  relevant to their experiences as a student at Northwestern State University.  Using a model that  focuses on proactive education, the committee's work will attempt to foster, within each student,  a measure of personal responsibility for their actions and a consistent knowledge of how those  actions impact the community.

 B. Responsibilities: The committee will provide outreach and information through a variety of  media designed to engage students.  The scope of the committee's informational charge will  include (but not be limited to) reporting, personal safety, self-protection and defense, alcohol  and drug use, fire safety, residential life safety, profiles and statistics, prevention information,  sexual assaults, stress management and health safety concerns.

II. Membership

 A. Committee Coordinator:  The Coordinator shall be appointed by the Dean of Students for a  term of one year.  The Coordinator shall not have voting power. The Committee Coordinator  will be responsible for calling and presiding over meetings, appointing a recorder for each  meeting, and ensuring that minutes are distributed to all voting members, to the Dean of  Students and to the Director of Student Services.

 B. Voting Membership: All members shall be appointed for a term of one year.  A majority of  members must be present to constitute quorum and conduct business.

1. One Representative from the University Police Department
2. One Representative from University Health Services
3. One Representative from Campus Living Villages
4. One Representative from the University Counseling Center
5. One Student Appointed by the Student Government Association
6. One Student Appointed by the Dean of Students
7. One Faculty/Staff Member Appointed by the Dean of Students

III. Operational Plan

 A. The committee will meet at least once each semester, as arranged by the Committee  Coordinator.

 B. Committee members will plan, promote, implement and evaluate regular awareness and  educational events pursuant to their responsibilities as a committee.   These events should  include activities relevant to national monthly awareness themes and programs as appropriate to  the Northwestern State University community.
